Service To The Disaster Community Erthquake and Tsunami Palu 2018

On September 28, 2018, at around 18.00 WITA, Palu area and surrounding areas in Central Sulawesi were hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale. This earthquake disaster took place when the Palu Koro Fault, which crosses the city of Palu, shifted about 10 kilometers below ground level.  Five minutes later, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released a tsunami warning. The agency warned that the ocean waves would reach 0.5 to three meters. Between three to six minutes later palu city was hit by waves as high as six meters. Since then, there have been at least 500 aftershocks in Palu, most of which were not felt by residents.

It is inconceivable how much moral and material damage this has caused by such disasters. Moreover, the number of disaster victims certainly requires a helping hand. In Palu the death toll was recorded at 1,703 people, Donggala 171 people, Sigi 223 people, Parigi Moutong 15 people, and Pasangkayu 1 person. While the injured victims from the palu earthquake and tsunami reached 4,612 people. In addition, there are still as many as 1,309 people missing to date. Some 223,751 people were also forced to evacuate at 122 points.

Members of the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University sent a Disaster Response Team to help ease the health burden of victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu and surrounding areas, Central Sulawesi in the spirit of humanity.  The event was held in palu area and surrounding areas from October 8, 2018 to October 11, 2018. The event was attended by 9 volunteers from Udayana University's Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program as medical aid workers, the Unud Volunteer Team arrived in Palu on October 10, 2018 to provide assistance to the victims of the disaster. The team from the Faculty of Medicine of Udayana University once arrived in Palu received briefings and division of duties and directly carried out the operation. The team also brought assistance in the form of medical devices to deal with the injured. Medical Rehabilitation Installation of Undata Regional General Hospital became the basecamp of the volunteer team of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. The team began carrying out treatment especially to orthopedic patients in tents set up at Undata Hospital on October 11, 2018.

Medical services activities include anamnesis, physical examination and vital signs, as well as basic treatment in the form of medicines and wound care if needed. Surgery activities are indicated for victims who need special measures, for example in the condition of fractures / fractures. The action can be in the form of implant installation or debridement. In addition, education is also carried out about wound care to the community.

This community service activity is considered to run well judging by community enthusiasm and the improvement of public health degrees handled. Based on the feedback received, it was obtained that this event left a deep impression on the participants. All participants feel helped by the implementation of this activity.
