Scientific Activities of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Education Program Faculty of Medicine Udayana University
Scientific activities routinely carried out by the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Education Program of Faculty of Medicine Udayana University. Despite of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, scientific activities are still routinely carried out. The inability to perform face-to-face meetings do not become an obstacle for the continued implementation of scientific activities in the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Education Program. Online or hybridmeeting can be solution for carrying out the scientific meeting and activities. The implementation of scientific activities is carried out and regulated specifically by each division, so that would adjusted according to activity schedule of each division.
The online or hybrid scientific activities is as effective as the offline (face-to-face) scientific meeting. Participants hold on-cam meetings and presenters conduct interactive discussions, so that interactions and discussions are established in two-way communication. Online or hybrid scientific meeting is also an ideal option for the consultants and residents because it does not require a real room and more flexible, could performed in any time on any place.
Scientific activities that are routinely held include morning reports, weekly reports, and scientific presentations from each division. The morning report is a presentation / report performed by emergency team on duty of previous day to present cases encountered during emergency room duty, which discusses the assessment and action plans to be carried out for the patients. The weekly report is presentation of patients who got surgeries during the week, and those who will get surgeries in the next week. This presentation discusses the basic sciences, diagnosis, overall management, and operating techniques in order to provide the best treatment option for all the patients. In addition, the scientific presentations performed by focusing more on theoretical topics and discussions.
The scope of the discussion of scientific activities carried out includes discussions on the theoretical basis, surgical techniques, scientific journals and also the problems encountered on the health services of patient treatment. This is useful so the students and residents would be able to apply knowledge to the patients appropriately according to the latest scientific and knowledge developments. The implementation of scientific activities begins with a presentation explaining the material as a topic of discussion, then it continues with discussions between the speakers and participants. If participants are still not clear about the discussion, participants can directly ask to the presenter or consultants.
During the discussion, the consultants can also directly assess the feedback from the discussion participants by asking some direct questions to assess whether the participants have understood the topic being discussed. It is hoped that after participating in scientific activities, participants will gain new insights and understanding about Orthopaedic and Traumatology sciences and knowledge.
